RE:RUN is a first-person combat platformer created in Unity by Dani for the Brackeys Game Jam 2020.2. The theme of the jam, Rewind, served as the inspiration for the game's signature feature, which turns every level traversal into a new experience by sending you back to your starting point when you grab a power-up.
When you grab a power-up, like a sword, double jump, or speed boost, you are taken back to where you started. The enemies you defeated are still gone, and the level's state is preserved. This means that after every upgrade, you need to reevaluate your strategy and adjust your approach as needed.
Parkour-style fluid mobility is emphasized in the game through wall-running, sprinting, jumping, and accurate sword swings. Instead of button-mashing, combat is manual and timing-based, requiring precise aim.
Each level offers a series of upgrades, such as:
The mid-air platforms are used for the levels, combining the placement of enemies with the difficulty of moving on the platforms. You will fall into the void because of your wrong jumps.
You have to balance between attacking and being agile to jump over obstacles as enemies often guard important routes or power-up platforms. Rewinding later can be simpler if they are cleared early.
RE:RUN demonstrates how a straightforward concept, when done right, can produce an engaging and unforgettable experience. This game will appeal to both casual players like you and speed gamers because of its combination of speed, strategy and precision skills.
